Backyard Makeover On A Budget: What To Save On And Splurge On!

I love summer! This year I set the goal to decorate and transform our deck into the family-friendly backyard. And as always, I wanted to makeover the backyard on a budget because Matt has trained me to not ever want to pay an arm and a leg for decor (and everything needed to be kid/toddler friendly, from plates to tables to gardening).

Last year we moved into this house in May and other rooms in the house took priority over decorating the backyard. Not only that but it was difficult to imagine a space last year when Adeline was 9 months old and crawling, those stairs off the deck made me so nervous, but now she is 18 months old and a pro at being safe around the stairs which opens a world of possibilities for decorating the year!

Let’s talk about what to splurge on and what to save on when decorating your family-friendly backyard:

SAVINGS | Patio furniture! If you live in Canada, like my family, we have severely short summers! We maximum have 3 months of summer-like weather, and even then we can have some crazy cold rainy weeks, so why spend your whole backyard makeover budget on furniture that will barely be used throughout the summer? Try Kijiji (only available for Canadians) or go garage sale-ing! I got this patio table and chairs for $75 on Kijiji – that’s a testament that you can accomplish your budget-friendly, chic patio!

If you’re still not able to find anything that is cheap, subscribe to your local home improvement store’s email list to know exactly when their biggest sales are – Matt is always looking at and comparing prices from Canadian Tire.

SAVINGS | Decor and lighting! The cups, the centrepiece plants, the outdoor rug (bought 50% off), the throw pillows, the string lights – all bought on clearance throughout the year. Sometimes you need to wait for those big sales in the middle of winter or spring to build up your outdoor decor stash! The best sales for summer items are off season, just like the best time to buy Christmas ornaments are on clearance during the spring and summer.

Keep a physical vision board or a Pinterest backyard inspiration board to help you keep focus throughout the year so you can makeover your backyard on a budget!

SPLURGE | Reuseable plates! I know paper plates are every moms dream because there is no dish washing afters – but the environment guys, we all have to do our part. Especially because if we’re being honest, we never recycle those paper plates they go straight into the garbage… been there, I’ve done it myself!

Plus, it’s a little bit of a splurge to buy more than you need – if you imagine you have a BBQ with your friends or family, how many plates will you need? That’s kind of where the splurge part comes in! If you are truly going to go all in with the reuseable plates, then buying a 12 piece plate set is going to be more expensive than just 6 for your own family to use day-to-day.

SPLURGE | Custom sensory table! The main attraction of our kid-friendly deck is this amazing sensory table from Farmer’s Daughter Workshop in Edmonton, AB! If you are losing your mind because your kids cannot entertain themselves you need this table. I love this sensory table so much because it’s versatile in how you use it – this large bin sensory table comes with two planks that cover the top and make it into a kid-size picnic table. I highly recommend the large bin sensory table because it accommodates kids from 2-9 years old – the best bang for your buck!

Soon, I’ll be sharing a list of the ultimate outdoor games you can do with this sensory table – because we all need some inspiration for summer activities for toddlers when we’re in the thick of motherhood!

SAVINGS | Kid-friendly gardening! It goes without saying toddlers can be a little rough with delicate things, so Matt has taken it upon himself to teach the girls to plant mini vegetable gardens. They used these thrifted white railing planters to plant seeds from our local gardening centre. The girls get to pick 2-3 vegetables and they learn how to plant them, water them, and watch them grow! It’s educational and cheap if you buy seeds instead of already grown plants!

Trust me, I know how tempting it is to buy the mature plants, if it was my job to do the gardening that’s what I would do… thankfully Matt is much more patient!

I hope you can find some sort of motivation or inspiration for decorating your backyard on a budget – it can be done! I know you can do it!

Here is a list of the places everything I used for my kid-friendly backyard makeover:

patio table: Kijij | sensory table: Farmer’s Daughter Workshop | outdoor rug: Bed Bath & Beyond | seat cushions: Walmart | tropical throw pillows: Wayfair (similar ones here)| reuseable plates: Wayfair (here are a few modern melamine plate sets I love, here and here) | clear cups: Bed Bath & Beyond | cutlery holder/planter: Walmart | cutlery: Structube | centre piece plants: Canadian Superstore |watermelon food cover: Home Sense (super cute one from Etsy, here) | blue bunting banner: Walmart | white planters: Canadian Tire | white string lights: Home Hardware

Pregnancy Outfit Ideas | How To Dress During Pregnancy Without Maternity Clothes

It took me 2 babies before I realized I did not want to wear maternity clothes while pregnant! If traditional maternity clothes are not for you, don’t be afraid to break the mold and learn how to dress during your pregnancy without maternity clothes.

Way back in 2013, I bought a whole maternity wardrobe with my first and I have honestly donated all those maternity clothes – they were not my style! So, I started to look for non-maternity dresses that I could wear while my baby bump grew and stumbled into some of the comfiest clothes for wearing while pregnant!

That being said, there are some maternity clothes I adore – and nursing bras are kind of a must! If you have access to a Target (I’m talking to all my Canadian mamas), they have some of the best maternity jeans and denim shorts! I bought a pair of black maternity jeans and I am basically living in them until this baby boy arrives.

If you need some pregnancy outfit ideas (that are mostly non-maternity), check out my secret to pregnancy style and how to avoid ugly maternity clothes!

Not everyone wants to spend more than $60 on a maternity dress during their pregnancy, which they will not wear again unless you’re pregnant again (trust me, you will not wear it again). So, if you truly want to invest into an intentional wardrobe that you’ll wear again after pregnancy, into breastfeeding (or pumping or formula) journey, and afterwards – do not shop at traditional maternity stores!

Here are my favourite dresses for more than $60 – they are good quality items and you can feel it in the make of the garment:

It’s all about the fit – while some moms-to-be love the skin tight fitted dresses (and honestly, I used to be all about it too) but when I’m pregnant during the summer I want to be able to feel airy and able to move around. Especially now that I have toddlers to run after while pregnant!

Food Guide To Central & Downtown Edmonton

Where are you going to eat tonight in Edmonton? If you’re looking for your next supper out, date night, or girl’s night – check out my list of Edmonton restaurants in this food guide to Central and Downtown Edmonton!

Good food brings us together – family, friends, and strangers! Here in YEG we have plenty of great Edmonton restaurants downtown!

I love that Edmonton is the smallest world ever and it doesn’t really hit you until you start talking to someone in line or beside you and realize you know someone in common. And yes, people in Edmonton really do just chat up strangers while waiting in line!

Hannah, from the popular Edmonton lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, is sharing her food guide to YEG! From sweet to savoury, check out your next date night restaurant.

I am on a mission to serve you a food map of Edmonton. Whether you are interested in chai lattes, chicken and bacon waffles, macarons, or pizzas – there is something for everyone!

Here is your Central & Downtown Edmonton Food Guide:
  1. Central Social Hall | 10909 Jasper Avenue | One of my favourite brunch spots because they always have room with their eating area and gorgeous patio! My favourites are the Beautiful Salad, The Cure, and their Chicken & Waffles. I also love that Central opened another location in the heart of St. Albert, so I never have to be without it!
  2. Glow Juicery | 7911 104 Street | A classic juicery that is always collaborating and creating new healthy foods! Glow is a Canada wide business that has a handful of locations in Edmonton. I personally love the Blue Majik Lemonade.
  3. The Common | 9910 109 Street | Chicken & Waffles. That is all I have to say. But there is so much more to The Common than it’s food – the whole place is a mood. The decor, the DJ set, the bar, the patio. And I’ve heard it’s a great place to dance and enjoy music on the weekend!
  4. Pip | 10403 83 Avenue | If you’re looking for a great brunch spot off of Whyte Avenue, you need to try Pip! While I’ve only had their delicious brunch – I know it’s highly millennial of me to rave about their avocado toast, but it’s just so good – I’ve heard their dinner menu is just as amazing!
  5. DOSC | 10190 104 Street | DOSC screams glam when you walk into it – not gaudy, over-the-top glam but old money glam. They have two sections in the same open area, the Drunken Ox restaurant and Sober Cat cafe (get it? DOSC?). The dinner menu is divine, I highly recommend the brussel sprouts and gnocchi. I can speak highly for the lattes in the cafe too, except for their chai lattes. They are not up to my standard for living in Edmonton where chai lattes are taken seriously.
  6. Cacao 70 | 10430 82 Avenue | If you are in the mood for something sweet, you need to run over to Cacao 70! Originally Cacao 70 opened up a little pop up vendor in Kingsway Mall’s Community area that served their decadent specialty chocolate dipped cones before the expanded into their 3 locations in Edmonton (Whyte Avenue, Ice District, West Edmonton Mall). There are multiple concepts to the restaurant – Sweet House (extravagant waffles, sundaes, and specialty ice cream cones), Dip Shop (specialty ice cream cones), and Eatery (bistro menu, and all the sweets).
  7. The Holy Roller | 8222 Gateway Blvd | A blogger’s/photographer’s dream to photograph – I cannot even describe the interior, it’s so many design themes in one! I’m a huge fan of charcuterie and the one I had at The Holy Roller was awesome!
  8. Juniper Cafe & Bistro | 9415 87 Street | I had the privilege of testing out this hidden Edmonton gem during a tour of local Edmonton restaurants for the YEG Home Show – and their desserts are to die for. It’s not a delicate piece of cake or pie, it’s a hardy serving of the best freshly made desserts! I highly recommend trying the angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries if it’s available!
  9. Love Pizza | 10196 109 Street | Another favourite of mine because , just like Central Social Hall, they also opened another location in St. Albert so even though I’ve moved out to the burbs I never have to go without Love Pizza! If you live in Edmonton and haven’t had the chance to support the Love Pizza team, and enjoy their delicious menu or make your own pizza – it’s a must!
  10. Blue Plate Diner | 10145 104 Street | Sometimes you don’t want crazy meals, you need a home cooked meal that you didn’t cook yourself – you know what I mean? That’s when you head to the Blue Plate Diner! They make the best breakfast and dinners that make you feel cozy and good inside. Plus it’s the perfect location if you’re looking for brunch or lunch on a Saturday during the Downtown Edmonton Farmer’s Market.
  11. Sorrentino’s Cafe & Bistro | 10665 109 Street | Sorrentino’s also wears many hats – from catering, to cooking classes, to fine dining, to cafes and bistros! I have nothing poor to say about them, they have delicious Italian food and great service!
  12. Remedy Cafe | 8631 109 Street | Anyone else remember the original Remedy? The narrow and deep location beside the video store? Can we have a round of applause for how much Remedy has grown from then to now! Remedy Cafe has the ultimate chai lattes – this is the standard, for some it’s too sweet but it’s about the depth and richness of the actual flavours. That’s how a chai latte should be! You can find 6 locations around the Edmonton area – all locations are the perfect spots to have chai dates, study, relax, people watch. It is always so busy and I love that this restaurant that is so close to my heart is thriving!
I know there are so many more restaurants I haven’t touched on but keep your eyes peeled as I begin a second list of the best restaurants in Edmonton!

I much prefer to get pimples around the edges of my face (closer to my hair line) than in the middle, but if you are acne-prone with hormonal acne then you know that my pimples pop up all around my chin and mouth area. The complete opposite of what I wish would happen!

Here are the key steps to covering up a super red pimple without looking cakey:

Exfoliate beforehand, you want the texture of your skin to be as smooth as possible when you apply your make-up!

Use your favourite primer, I recently was sent the Avon Magix Tint in fair – even though it’s technically a tinted moisturizer – the result of it on my skin feels just like my other favourite make-up primers and that’s what I have been using lately! If you don’t have a primer, here are a couple others that I really like too:

Apply your foundation - I use Beautycounter foundation that is sheer to medium coverage, I like this as a light layer for the next step of concealer. Usually I just use my fingers to apply it, but when I am not trying to smudge or fade my colour correcting products I use a brush or a damp Beautyblender.

Time for concealer, the most important step for camouflaging your pimple! I use this concealer from Clinique, I like using it because it's super light weight and gives the perfect amount of coverage for only a tiny bit of product. I apply this with a damp Beautyblender, and adding more concealer if needed - just remember it's a slippery slope on where the line between flawless and cakey are!

Bake your trouble spot, with a translucent or coloured powder - I prefer using the Dermablend Translucent Loose Setting Powder! For my day-to-day wear I don't "bake" my make-up but I find when I have a spot I'm trying to conceal this step helps keep my many layers of make-up from sliding throughout the day!

For those who don't know what baking your make-up is - it is when you apply an excessive amount of loose make-up powder on your face and let it rest for 5-10 minutes, which allows the make-up to set and give you a flawless finish, and then lightly brush the excessive powder with a fluffy make-up brush. It makes your make-up a creaseless appearance!

Then continue the rest of your make-up! And you're done, voila!

For myself that includes contouring with my Maskcara Walnut contour, illuminating with my go-to Maybelline Masterstobing Illuminating Stick, filling in my brows with Benefit's Ka-Brow Gel, applying Benefit's Rollerlash mascara, and putting on my new favourite Burt's Bees All Aglow Lip & Cheek stick (Blush Bay)!

Like I said in my Instagram post (come follow me @honeyandbetts!), the hardest part of this DIY project is the taping. I wanted to keep the zippers and material, handles, and wheels in the original state – I can imagine that because they move and are being handled the most that the paint could wear or be chipped more easily in those areas so to keep it looking the most professional I needed to tape those areas tightly.

What tape did I use? I imagine I could have used painter’s tape, but what I had around the house were duct tape and packing tape. Both worked very well!

I used the duct tape on the zippers because it needed the most coverage and duct tape is thick. As you can see in the second photo, the tape job looked amateur but I took a lot of time to make sure everything was sealed and precise!

The part I had to get creative on was the wheels! Taping up 4 wheels was not going to be easy, not at all – so I grabbed one plastic grocery bag and cut it into 4 large squares. I wrapped the wheel in the plastic square, then taped the edges to the suitcase with packing tape. This was a game changer for spray painting my suitcase, because I can guarantee that if I had only used tape on the wheels some spray paint would have leaked through.

Once the taping was finished – spray painting my suitcase with Rust-Oleum was easy! Head to the link above to check it out!

Inexpensive DIY Planter Ideas | Spray Paint Planters White

Summer is here and I have so many easy DIY projects planned before baby boy arrives in July! In the Spring, I planned to have a few cute white planters on our deck but quickly learned how expensive items are when you want them in a certain colour. So after toying around with some creative and inexpensive DIY planter ideas I found the solution in the aisles of Canadian Tire!

Hannah, from the popular Canadian lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, shares how to DIY cheap, modern planters for outdoors. It's two easy steps using ugly dark brown old planters and a little spray paint! I found these brown planters on super clearance – but like I said, I really wanted bright white planters for my plants. I was not going to be able to create the ideal planter with traditional paint but knew how handy spray paint was.

When I think back, I wish I grabbed more of those cheap planters (similar ones here) because the planters turned out to be exactly what I wanted once I spray painted them white!

2 Easy Steps To Spray Painting Plastic Planters:

First, I washed them with water, since they went from the store to my house. If you are transforming old planters I would be more diligent in washing any dirt off.

Second, I used Rusto-leum’s Painter’s Touch in White I gave each planter two coats of the spray paint, and they were ready to go! I’ve used the Painter’s Touch spray paint for a few projects last year and liked that it dries fast and can adhere to lots of different surface materials.

Spray painting tip: remember to spray paint the inside of the planter – it doesn’t have to be covered entirely but enough that wherever the dirt stops it gives the effect that your planter’s inside is white too.

The shrubs I planted in the DIY white planters are from Costco – two different types of juniper and one cedar – they were around $15 each in the garden department. I love the bright contrast of the green and the white!

What DIY planter ideas do you have planned this year? Have you ever spray painted a planter before?

The Perfect Bubble Braid Tutorial – In 7 Easy Steps!

I honestly couldn’t braid my hair by myself until I was 15 years old, my mom always did it for me! But after lots of practice braiding I can say I thoroughly enjoy it – besides the fact that my arms get very tired after 5 minutes, anyone else get tired braiding arms? Well thankfully, this step-by-step bubble braid tutorial doesn’t make your arms tired!

For this bubble braid tutorial you’ll need mini elastics, I prefer the clear ones but any mini elastics will do!

Here are my 7 easy steps to creating this double bubble braid look:

#1 Part Your Hair

First, part your hair as you like – for wearing a hat I prefer a middle part – and pin back two front pieces that you’ll curl afterwards.

The BEST Downtown Calgary Hotel | Hotel Elan’s 2 Bedroom Suite Review

This post is in partnership with Hotel Elan Calgary and Press & Post. All opinions are 100% my own.

Finding the perfect downtown Calgary hotel is a crucial part of a relaxing getaway for me and staying in Hotel Elan‘s Energizer 2 Bedroom Suite was the easiest choice to make for the whole trip. I spent a weekend in Calgary, AB with my best friends at the beginning of April and it was just what I needed to feel refreshed! Our group drove down together in the new Ford Edge ST 2019 (what a dream to drive!) and basically ate food all weekend from the best restaurants in Calgary.

What more can a woman want for a relaxing weekend?

The main differences between the Serenity 2 Bedroom Suite and the Energizer 2 Bedroom Suite are:

  1. Serenity Suite has 2 king beds, Energizer Suite has 1 king bed and 1 queen bed.
  2. Energizer Suite has a workout room in-suite.
Workout Room

I loved staying in the Energizer Suite during this trip – a little bit because I was sleeping in the king bed – mostly for the workout room, but we didn’t really use it for working out… with 4 adult women staying in 1 suite, “getting ready” room is at a prime and those floor to ceiling mirrors with plug ins were perfect for all of us to get ready at the same time.

I always joke with Matt that he has no idea of the hassle of multiple ladies getting ready in the morning (he grew up with 4 brothers), I mean give us a few years before all our daughters start their own beauty routines besides brushing their teeth…

Having access to that much mirror space and electricity made staying on schedule possible. I bet you didn’t expect that input in this review!

Bathroom

Modern, sleek, and luxurious is how I would describe the bathrooms. Let me tell you about the tub. The tub is amazing. This is the tub I want in my future home, that is how amazing it is. Have you ever had a bath at home and your tub is too small or too shallow? Where some of your body is out of the warm water? Not in this tub! It is deep and wide, and if you plan on staying at Hotel Elan I highly recommend taking a relaxing bath.

And the shower. I was trying to describe the shower to Matt when I got home, but I don’t think I did it justice. The rainfall-style shower head is huge, and covers your entire body (I’m realizing I have a thing about not being cold while in the tub or shower…) with a steady pressure. The temperature knobs are actual temperatures shown on the dial, so you can control the warmth to the degree.

And Hotel Elan’s water is so soft! They must put extra salt in it because I brought my regular shampoo with me so I know that it was something else making my hair super silky. I honestly tried to take a picture of the shower head so I could find the same one, I need to have it!

Also, there are magical heated floors and a heated toilet seat in the bathroom. Yes, it is magical and I also want one of those too!

Bedrooms

It was most likely a combination of the excitement of the trip, no children waking me at 6am, and the bed – but I had the best sleep during our stay at Hotel Elan. It was so good that I started sleep talking when my best friend was still awake – something that I thought I had stopped doing… she told me in the morning that after our heads hit the pillows I said “I need to bury my best friend…” during which my friend starts freaking out inside (rightfully so!) and then I finished with “Chantallllllll“. Thankfully that was my friend sleeping in the other room!

Lesson of the story: don’t have weird funeral arrangement discussions on a road trip down with your best friends that may trigger you to say strange things in your sleep!

Lounge Area

When we weren’t sleeping or getting ready we were gathered in the lounge area waiting for the others to finish up. There is a kitchenette with a stove top (no oven), sink, coffee maker, glasses, mugs, bowls, utensils – basically everything you would need! The sectional is placed right in front of the TV mounted on the wall, and there is a table with office chairs for eating or meetings.

I love the possibilities this suite offers – it can be the perfect resting area for a family trip or a gathering place for a business meeting. It has so much to give!

Breakfast Buffet

You can ask anyone who has stayed at Hotel Elan, their deluxe breakfast buffet is delicious. I even heard from a little birdie they sometimes offer pirogies in the buffet! Yum!

Their weekend breakfasts are from 7-11am, I may have read it wrong when we arrived and initially told my friends it ends at 9am… there was a hint of panic when we woke up at 8am but it was all clarified with a quick call down to the front desk!

This trip the breakfast buffet offered build-your-own yogurt parfaits, fruit trays, scrambled eggs, hash browns, quiche, roasted vegetables, sausage, toast, and cereal. Then their usual line up of beverages at the drink station are a variety of juices, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

The food tastes fresh, the staff are always kind and helpful, and the breakfast area is so bright and cheerful!

Other amenities at Hotel Elan include:

Fitness Centre

Free wifi in all rooms

Complimentary calling to 75 countries worldwide

Heated underground parking on site for $20 per night

I hope I’ve shed a little insight into how much I enjoy staying at this downtown Calgary hotel! Almost all of the restaurants we visited during this girls weekend trip were walkable from the hotel, you’re situated right in the middle of the hottest neighbourhood for the best restaurants!
