MiFold Booster Seat Review – Is It Safe In Canada?

Car seats and booster seats are the worst – I mean, they are getting easier and easier to install into your vehicle with the new technology brands are putting into them – if you have ever travelled with a car seat or booster seat you know how ridiculous they are. Not to mention, you may not get them back in one piece from your airline… but that’s a different story for another day!

Hannah, from the Edmonton motherhood blog Honey & Betts, is sharing her experience and review of the Mifold Booster Seat. Perfect for flying for school aged kids who are not old enough or big enough to use just a seatbelt.

Hannah, from the Edmonton motherhood blog Honey & Betts, is sharing her experience and review of the Mifold Booster Seat. Perfect for flying for school aged kids who are not old enough or big enough to use just a seatbelt.

I was so excited to try out the new Mifold Booster Seat (and it comes in many different colours) for children 4+ years old, weighing between 18-45 kg (40-100lbs), and 102-145 cm (40-57 inches) in height. It freaked me out at first that Annaliese would be going from a huge car seat to a tiny little booster… but I did my research and the Mifold Booster is the real deal!

The Mifold Booster Seat is 10x smaller than the average booster seat and you can install it in 30 seconds.

It’s made of aircraft aluminum (almost as strong as steel) and a super tough plastic polymer for impact resistance.

And best of all, the Mifold is accepted by the Canadian regulations CMVSS 213.2 in line with IIHS Booster Belt Fit Rating and the Safety Belt Safe booster use guidelines!

Plus, when I examine the amount of materials it takes to make the Mifold Booster and compare it to a regular booster seat, I can’t imagine the impact this product is going to have on our environment! There is less product packaging, less materials used, and less waste when it is finished.

The biggest wins for me with the Mifold Booster is:
  1. It’s the best travel booster seat! It fits easily into a carry-on bag or a diaper bag for hassle-free family travel.
  2. 3 Mifold Booster Seats can easily fit in 1 row of a vehicle. It’s perfect for families with compact cars or compact SUVs.
  3. It cleans simply with soap, water, and air-drying. It is one piece so you won’t be able to lose little buttons or clips.

Let’s be honest we’ve all lost the little fasteners that come with the big car seats or booster seats at one point while taking them apart to clean them… or is that just me?

The Best Cheap Drugstore Self Tanner For Fair Skin | Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Spray Vs. Cream Before And After

It feels like the biggest trend in beauty right now are beauty and make-up dupes, and for those who don’t know what those are – a dupe is a less expensive or drugstore version of a high end beauty product. And I read online that not only was Airbrush Legs a dupe to the St. Tropez tanning line, but that it was better than St. Tropez in some beauty bloggers opinions because it overall in some opinions the best cheap drugstore self-tanner for fair skin!

Is the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs spray on or cream applicator better? Hannah, from the Edmonton beauty blog Honey & Betts, is sharing her thoughts in a review for the Fairest Glow for fair skin. Check out what the best cheap drugstore self tanner for fair skin is!

For the past 3 years I have been only using Nkd Skin organic self-tanner, a safer beauty self-tanner that I think is fool proof – but when in pinch I wanted to see how to Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs worked on my pale, post winter legs.

But then the next dilemma arose when I was standing in the sunscreen aisle in London Drugs… which is better the Airbrush Legs Spray or the Airbrush Legs Lotion application? And when I grabbed both I wanted to test the out together so I could compare them on my legs.

My Right Leg | Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Lotion

Before I tried this experiment, my brain was in favour of the lotion because that’s what the Nkd Skin tanner is and I’ve had great success with it.

When I first opened the Airbrush Legs Fairest Glow Lotion (there are fair, medium and dark options so be careful which one you buy!) I immediately thought “wow, that’s pretty orange…”. Thankfully, there is a limited smell to the self-tanner – and in my opinion even less than my Nkd Skin tanner.

The Airbrush Legs Lotion spreads easily but be aware that it dries fast! I did not have a buffing mitt so I used a dark facecloth to buff out the cream in light circles all over my legs, ankles and knees.

The first layer of the Airbrush Legs Lotion was noticeable, then the second layer was even more so. I recommend only one layer for future use, the second was almost like when you apply too many coats of nail polish (head to this blog post for a few of my favourite nail polishes!) and the colour starts to look worse rather than better… that’s the effect I experience with the second layer of the Airbrush Legs.

My Left Leg – Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Spray

Like I mentioned above I went into this review thinking I was going to prefer the lotion to the spray, just from hearing from other beauty bloggers that the Airbrush Legs Spray was quite messy. But to my surprise, I prefer the spray to the lotion!

The photo of me applying the spray was the first time I used the bottle, and the bottom end of the stripe is the accurate result of the spray. I didn’t hold down the nozzle hard enough until the end so even though it looks like it’s a weak line, the rest of my leg was covered easily after pressing hard enough.

And with the Airbrush Legs Spray I felt like the product applied more even and used less product!

Same with the spray, I used a dark facecloth to buff out the self-tanner onto my legs, ankles, and knees. And was very happy with the look afterwards!

But the same with the second layer, it looked cake-y. So I highly recommend with either the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Lotion or Spray one layer is plenty.

Tips For Applying Airbrush Legs Self-Tanner
  1. Both the lotion and the spray dry quickly, I found applying and buffing the self-tanner in sections was the best strategy.
  2. Use a buffing mitt, or a dark facecloth! If you want to avoid streaks or looking like you have a self-tanner fail you need to buff all the areas that you applied self-tanner.
  3. Apply sparingly to your ankles and knees, just like with all self-tanners your ankles and knees are drier than the rest of your legs so they’ll absorb more product and give that dreaded orange look if you’re not careful.
  4. Wash your hands immediately! The Airbrush Legs dries fast and orange hands are not cute.

The next time you’re in a pinch for a cheap drugstore self-tanner for fair skin, you can achieve that glow with the Airbrush Legs!

Which do you prefer, the Airbrush Legs Lotion or Airbrush Legs Spray? Or what do you think is the best cheap drugstore self-tanner for fair skin?

Hannah, the popular Canadian beauty blogger from Honey & Betts, shares her favourite skin care and makeup! From the Borghese Face Serum to Eye Serum to Night Cream to Mascara! Find your best, inexpensive safer beauty products!

I was first intrigued by the Costco Borghese beauty products when I discovered the Costco Kirkland Body Wash that was paraben-free, fragrance-free, and no sulfates. I couldn’t believe the jackpot I stumbled upon in the aisles of Costco – a safer beauty product that was inexpensive and available in-stores!

I was disappointed that the Costco Kirkland brand didn’t offer all the same safe beauty points in their shampoo and conditioner, the only drawback being there is fragrance in the Kirkland shampoo and conditioner (where the body wash uses essential oils for the scent).

So I eventually made my way over to the Costco Borghese skin care and make-up section and found they had quite a few safer beauty products available. From serums, to eye serums, to night creams, to lipsticks, to smudge-free mascara! There is something for everyone looking to incorporate safer beauty into their skin care routine.

I didn’t know until recently that Borghese Roma is a well-loved skin care and make-up brand that collaborates with Costco Kirkland for these products, the Borghese name is not just a brand created by Costco like Kirkland! I had no idea, I thought that was an interesting fact!

Here are my best Costco beauty and skin care products:

Kirkland Borghese Intensive Eye Serum | I liked the Intensive Eye Serum a lot! It has a smooth, creamy texture to it that absorbs well into your skin. The eye serum comes with two identical products in the same package, and I believe this was around $40 CAD so that is an amazing price for anyone finding their eye skin needing extra attention. And I love that it is fragrance-free!

Kirkland Borghese Replenishing Night Cream | First of all, I love when skin care products are packaged with this dispenser! It makes it so much easier to not waste product and to get the last drop of product. The Replenishing Night Cream is a heavier face cream that I found hydrating and brightening for my extremely dry skin. If you are one of those people who use the same face cream for morning and night, beware that your make-up may be difficult to apply with this on so try to only use it at night. This is a great beginner night skin care product for those wanting to do more for their skin while they sleep!

Here are my failed Costco beauty products:

Kirkland Borghese Revitalizing Face Serum | If you remember how silicone primers feel, that encompasses how the Revitalizing Face Serum feels when you apply it. You can actually feel it by just rubbing it between your hands, it was not right. It seemed to just sit on top of my skin rather than absorb into it. I prefer my face serums to be a liquid and oil based to penetrate and protect my skin – I don’t know if that’s the majority of people – but I was not impressed with this face serum because of it’s texture and absorption.

Kirkland Borghese Moisturizing Lipstick Crayon | I wanted these to work so badly! There are three neutral pink lipsticks that come in one package. The colour wasn’t sheer, and it wasn’t pigmented – it was a strange in between look that applied how I imagine my Grandma’s 10 year old lipsticks apply. They felt chalky and after the 5th time I wore them I had to throw them out. I’m still searching for a safer beauty lipstick that is affordable and available, and I will persevere until I find one!

And then that leaves the Kirkland Borghese Advance Lash Defining Mascara… I put this mascara to the test during an intense workout, and it served very well! There was no smudging, no flaking, or racoon eyes afterwards but the overall look on my lashes wasn’t what I prefer. I like lengthening and volumizing rather than lash defining, that is why the Costco mascara didn’t make it into one of the previous categories because everyone has different lashes and mascara needs. Performance-wise I definitely recommend this safer beauty mascara for anyone looking for that whoosh effect on your lashes!

6 Edmonton Coffee Shops You’ve Never Heard Of But Must Try!

If you’ve adventured to all of the popular coffee shops in downtown Edmonton or on Whyte Avenue, and are looking for a coffee shop that is a little different from the norm you’ve come to the right place! While creating a guest blog post (I’ll link to that Edmonton coffee shop list when it’s published) on the best coffee shops in Edmonton I discovered quite a few coffee shops in North Edmonton, East Edmonton, and West Edmonton I have never heard of.

Edmonton blog Honey & Betts share the 5 secret Edmonton coffee shops you've never heard of! Check out these coffee shops in north, east, and west Edmonton!

Of course, I had to investigate into these coffee shops because a) I love coffee and b) I love sharing local Edmonton businesses with you.

Here are my 6 Edmonton coffee shops you’ve never heard of but must try:
  1. Rogue Wave Coffee – If you’re looking for a hidden gem in the North Central area of Edmonton, this is your place! Rogue Wave Coffee not only serves coffee, they are also roasters and sell their own coffee beans on location and around the city. My favourite coffee is their Flat White!
  2. Lazio Italian Cafe – Driving past Lazio’s you wouldn’t expect a cute little coffee shop to be there but it is! You can find hot frothy lattes, fresh Italian desserts and gelato here. My favourite coffee is their Moccacino Freddo!
  3. Take 5 – It’s not your picture perfect, modern coffee shop, but Take 5 is a must-try because they have something that not even the most Edmonton famous cafes have… fresh doughnuts! This slice of retro heaven is a goldmine for whatever doughnut your heart desires! My favourite coffee is their drip coffee (with a couple doughnuts on the side).
  4. Waves Coffeehouse (with drive-thru!) – A new chain of coffee vendors are taking on Western Canada, and Edmonton now has it’s very own Waves Coffeehouse location (complete with drive-thru, if you didn’t already sense my excitement!) on the outside of the Anthony Henday Highway on the west side of Edmonton. My favourite coffee is their Canadiano Misto.
  5. The Carrot – If you’re looking for a full immersion of Edmonton culture and a cup of coffee, come to The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse! It’s a bohemian, community hub for the arts and connecting with people. My favourite coffee is their Latte.
  6. Square 1 Coffee – You can find this nugget of a coffee shop in South Edmonton, just North of the Derrick Country Club. Their coffee is amazing and they sell my favourite kombucha brand, Truebuch (I’ve heard the Mojito Mint is their winning flavour)! My favourite coffee is their Mocha.
Let me know if you find a new favourite Edmonton coffee shop from the list and the drink you tried! I’m always looking for coffee recommendations!

The Best Places To Eat In Calgary!

If you’ve followed Honey & Betts along for a couple years now, you know that I love travelling to Calgary, AB for mini road trips! My 3 best-friends and I basically eat the entire time we’re down there, and we’ve found some of the best places to eat in Calgary.

Hannah, from the Edmonton lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, is sharing a list of the best places to eat in Calgary. From downtown Calgary restaurants to cafes!

Each girl’s trip we try different Calgary restaurants and have loved discovering Calgary’s food and coffee scene – except Rosso Coffee Roasters, I always go there because their sweet lattes are my absolute favourite!

On our girl’s road trip we could resist these 4 best places to eat in Calgary:

Goro+Gun is a delicious Japanese restaurant hidden away in the downtown Calgary Scotia Centre. Their ramen bowls and broth are a must-try, I highly recommend the Miso Ramen.

1410 World Bier Haus‘s brunch menu surprised me the most! On the exterior it looks like most modern pubs or social halls, but once we were inside the floor to ceiling windows made the place look amazing. So don’t judge a book by it’s cover! Anyways, the brunch menu was really good – we had mimosas with pineapple juice, and I mean how could you have a mimosa at brunch? I had such a hard time choosing between all the delicious options, I went with my go-to Breakfast Bowl. Yum!

Rosso Coffee Roasters has been my all time favourite Calgary coffee spot for 3 years now. If they opened a place in Edmonton I would be there every day! Their coffee is so good. And their business is thriving! There are 7 (and counting) Rosso Coffee Roaster locations in Calgary, my new favourite spot is their Tuxedo location. Like I mentioned before, my ultimate favourite coffee is their Sweet Latte.

Blanco Cantina was an accidental discovery that we can’t wait to go back to! We were trying to find dinner near our hotel (Hotel Elan) and after finding a few restaurants with too long of wait times, we stumbled into Blanco Cantina. If you have never had a Poodle, it’s like a bulldog but with margarita and bubbly, you aren’t living! You need to run down to Calgary and try it!

Where do you think the best places to eat in Calgary are? Let me know in the comments for my new girl’s road trip!

3 Tips On How To Hide A Mommy Tummy | Living With Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti is the condition in which the two sides of the abdominal muscle walls of your stomach muscles separate and struggle to reconnect – that usually happens during pregnancy (also known as “mommy tummy”). Some moms do not experience Diastasis Recti to the extent that other moms do (please talk to your doctor if you think you are experiencing Diastasis Recti Abdominis), but typically all new moms experience it in the first 6 weeks postpartum.

I’ve found the more and more babies you have, the easier your uterus and stomach muscles expand to accompany your new baby compared to your first. I mean the silver lining is your body is a rockstar and knows exactly what to do! But if you’re a new mom who is experiencing the mommy tummy effect – there is a way to hide it under clothes until you find safe exercises to heal your Diastasis Recti.

There have been so many times between the first year of each of my babies lives, that eating lean proteins and lots of vegetables and exercising 4 times a week are not on my mind at all, especially while breastfeeding. And during that year it’s hard to see the clothes I want to wear and yet they don’t fit because of my loosened abdominals. While I will always love my body and love what my body can do, there are times when you have a work party or formal event that beats you down a little because nothing fits the way it used to.

So, how do I survive that time during postpartum that I need to accept my mommy tummy?

Here are my 3 tips on how to hide a postpartum tummy:

High waist jeans (and bottoms) are your BFF | If you don’t own a pair of high waist jeans, your mind is about to be blown! And then if you’re feeling bold tucking your shirt into your jeans will give make your mommy tummy look smaller in comparison. Often I love combining a pair of high waist jeans (that has a little stretch) with a flow-y t-shirt or oversized sweater. But like I mentioned in the beginning any high waisted bottoms will help hide your mommy tummy – as you can see above I paired this high waist tulle skirt. The narrow waist of the tulle skirt accentuates the part of my body I want you to focus on, and the flared out tulle hides the rest.

Flow-y dresses with a structured top (empire or swing style) are a must | Any dresses with a slightly defined waist or bust that flows down after will make you feel amazing and look amazing. Trust me, you want to avoid shift dresses or body-con dresses postpartum, especially if you’re already feeling self conscious. They will show off everything you’re trying to hide!

Mixing patterns and textures will elevate your mom style | You may not feel like you need a style overhaul, but your mom style will look so much more chic if you experiment with power clashing and mixing textures together. Smaller patterns, like polka dots, are cute and flattering. As well as longer cardigans or coats will elongate your body and make your tummy the least of your worries. You don’t need to stick to all black clothes to hide your mommy tummy. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with trying new things – maybe you’ll find a new style you like!

I hope this helped any moms that are feeling overwhelmed by their new bodies. We’ve all been there – whether we treat it with a diet, exercise, or a procedure – and you’re not alone in this!

How To Start A Blog | How To Choose A Blog Name | The Story Behind The Edmonton Lifestyle Blog Honey & Betts

Whenever I meet other bloggers or people who read my Edmonton lifestyle blog, Honey & Betts, I’m frequently asked “what is the reason behind the name Honey & Betts?” – and it comes back to how and why I started my blog 4 years ago. If you’re considering starting a blog, figuring out how to choose a blog name is a very important, strategic and personal decision!

Hannah, from the popular Edmonton lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, shares how to choose a blog name you won't regret when starting a blog in 2019. And the meaning of her blog Honey & Betts' name!

So, when I started my original blog (it was named something else that Honey & Betts, but I can’t remember the exact name) I did a lot of research of what goes into blogging and starting a professional, successful blog before my sister and I decided upon Honey & Betts.

Although some blogs are in a specific niche – like gluten-free food blogger or drugstore beauty blogger – I love to write and photograph a lot of different things (skincare, makeup, food, local businesses, fashion, motherhood, travel, baby product reviews, and a lot more) so I didn’t want to make my blog’s name back me into a super specific niche.

Because if a super specific niche blogger writes something outside their niche Google/Pinterest doesn’t really like it. It’s hard for them to be successful outside that niche.

Which is another obstacle for lifestyle bloggers like myself – it’s harder to get domain authority and be successful on your site because your content is all over the place. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it!

Anyways, back to how to choose your blog name and how I chose Honey & Betts!

My sister and I really liked Stella & Dot at the time, and how they used their grandma’s names “Stella” and “Dot”. But after trying that structure with our own grandma’s names, it didn’t roll off the tongue the way we wanted it to. So, we tried my husband’s grandma’s name – Betty – with “honey” because my sister was constantly calling people “honey”. But Honey & Betty didn’t roll off the tongue either! That’s when it morphed into Honey & Betts.

Why did I settle on Honey & Betts? Because it didn’t narrow me down into a super specific niche, when you read the words Honey & Betts blog for the first time you have no idea what niche I am in, and that’s the way I want it. I had to work for years to build into my brand, dive into my blogging and local community, and create content that my readers could trust and be interested in.

And that’s how it all began and here’s where I am now!

If you have any questions on how to choose a blog name you won’t regret, feel free to ask below in the comments!

The 5 Best Hashtags To Connect With Edmonton Moms

I know how hard it is to make mom friends, especially if just moved to Edmonton or any city, but the beauty of social media is that it’s super easy to connect with moms in Edmonton or anywhere around the world! One of the ways I connected and found new Edmonton moms to be “Instagram friends” and then eventually real life friends is through local YEG hashtags.

The popular Edmonton lifestyle blog, Honey & Betts, is sharing how to make new friends in Edmonton especially mom friends for new mothers. From the best local YEG hashtags to connect online through Instagram to how to use hashtags. Check it out!
If you’re not a hashtag savvy, this will be groundbreaking for you to connect with other Edmonton moms!

Hashtags, if you have no idea how they work, bundle your Instagram posts with other people who have used the same hashtag. And it doesn’t just limit yourself to finding other moms in your area – if you’re looking for Edmonton restaurant inspiration, or to find a new Edmonton blogger to follow, or to discover local Edmonton small businesses to support – hashtags will connect you with whatever your heart desires!

The best Edmonton hashtags are not even all “motherhood” oriented either, it’s about getting to know the city of Edmonton and eventually you’ll find moms or women who you connect well with online.

The best hashtags to connect with Edmonton moms are:

Of course, there are always people you don’t want to be liking or commenting on their posts (like boudoir shoots, international men, and spam MLM accounts) using these local hashtags too so be aware that not everyone is an Edmonton mom who is using that hashtag – just don’t engage with them and move on. You’ll see what I mean eventually!

#yegmoms

#yegfoodie

#yeglocal

#yegbiz

#edmontonmoms

What I also love about using hashtags on Instagram is that you can follow the hashtags individually so that if someone publishes an Instagram post with that hashtag you will see it in your main Instagram feed.

I find it helps me connect even more with moms in Edmonton when I have limited time to go out to the playground (because who wants to go to the playground in the middle of winter), mom groups, play groups, or your child isn’t in school yet.
