Pregnancy Hacks: Complete Hospital Bag Checklist For Moms, Dads & Babies

It wasn’t until 2 weeks ago, when I was 27 weeks pregnant, that I decided to finally pack my hospital bag. After having 3 babies already I thought I would have some sort of idea to what I would need but honestly every single time I need to google what to put in my hospital bag! I needed to find the perfect hospital bag checklist for Canadian moms!

Hannah, the popular Canadian mom blogger from Honey & Betts, shares her ultimate summer due date hospital bag checklist for Canadian moms! From paperwork, to things for mom, to things for baby, and even all the things Dads need to help support you through labour and delivery. Or a c-section! Thankfully, when I was pregnant with my first born we lived 2 blocks away from the hospital so I was not worried if I was missing something – my husband could run back to our home and get it. This is now my fourth baby and my hospital bag is essentially the same as it was the first time! I had cross referenced a bunch of hospital bag lists and created one that worked well for me.

The only things I left out on my minimalist hospital checklist is any entertainment or extras you want to bring to the hospital with you.

With my first and second babies I did not bring my camera or laptop – it was an intense 24 hour labour and delivery with my first, and an equally as intense 14 hour labour with my second. But with my third I was induced and opted for the epidural as soon as I was 3cm dilated, so it was quite relaxing to be able to have our laptop to watch movies while I was labouring.

So, depending on what kind of labour you’re going to have depends on what extras you want to bring to help you through it!

What do you need to bring to the labour and delivery wing in your hospital bag?

For my hospital bag toiletries, I mostly bring skin care products – I never have worn make-up during labour or have wanted to put it on after to leave the hospital. I bring my skin care routine in travel sized containers I bought online, my own shampoo and conditioner, a loofa, razor, hair brush, and hair ties.

I’m more comfortable knowing that I can go home and lay down on my bed and not get make-up all over my sheets.

In the photos above you may notice I also have a Haakaa manual breast pump – this is the first time I am bringing either other them. I have heard excellent reviews of using the Haakaa breast pump to collect the milk that leaks out of your other breast as you feed your baby, so I am going to test them out and write a review later on about it!

What do you need to bring to the hospital for dad?

I also let Matt, my husband, pack his own stuff for the hospital. Though we learned after the first baby that they keep the labour and delivery units quite chilly, and he highly recommends to any dads-to-be to bring a sweater.

Now for the fun stuff – what do you need to bring to the hospital for baby?

I have never needed to bring diapers, but I do pack them in my hospital bag just in case! The hospital provides plenty of diapers, wipes, and vaseline for your baby’s hospital stay.

What are Vitamin D Drops? They are daily vitamins in liquid form that you will be giving to your newborn to prevent jaundice. You will be asked by your postpartum nurse, doctor or pediatrician if you’ve been giving the drops to your baby so you might as well do it from the start!

This time I am having a summer baby so the baby clothes are very different from when I packed for my late October babies. I have packed 2-3 onesies, a long sleeper, and a short sleeper because it completely depends on my baby’s size (length, chubbiness) and the weather that day.

Then I have a couple swaddle blankets, a knit blanket, and a car seat cover (I only use it if it’s blustery or raining, it comes off in the car so there’s plenty of airflow).

I included a checklist for any paperwork that needs to come to the hospital: ID, provincial health card, health insurance papers or card, cash (especially change for parking or the vending machines), and your doctor’s notes.

Typically in Canada, you will register beforehand and mail it into the hospital but if it’s preterm labour don’t worry about it! Just make sure you get the hospital as soon as possible, and your doctor’s notes will be sent over and you will just have to register at the hospital.

4 Awesome, Creative Pregnancy Announcement Ideas For Social Media

If there is one thing I learned about creative pregnancy announcement ideas it is some couples don’t announce their pregnancies at all on social media – for reasons of privacy or just not being active on social media at all. For me, a lot of my family live in a different province in Canada so finding an email list or text message list of all their numbers takes longer than snapping some photos and sharing it on Facebook.

Make sure you sign up for my email list! You will even receive my FREEBIE for the 3 phone apps I use to edit all my blog and Instagram photos, hurry up and go get it! It will make taking photos for your own Instagram, or blog, or for your personal photos so much easier!

I was so tired from having my eldest daughter in her first year of kindergarten and from having intense morning sickness in the first trimester that I didn’t have the energy or inspiration to coordinate a cute pregnancy announcement photoshoot like I did with Adeline.

But that didn’t stop me from taking some beautiful photos for us to share the due date of our 4th baby on social media!

That’s right, you read it correctly, I take all if not majority of the photos on my blog and social media! With a little help from my Canon camera, tripod and phone it was possible.

A few of my favourite pregnancy announcement ideas are:

  • Use a letterboard | Most people are mindlessly scrolling through their social media feeds, but when you are able to include words in your pregnancy announcement sharing a cute pregnancy announcement rhyme or your due date it will capture your friends and family’s attention much faster! Check out the modern letterboard we are using in our photos, here.
  • Utilize your ultrasound photo | I always cherish the ultrasound photos I get from each baby, it’s that moment of relief that there is a heartbeat (I’ve had 4 low risk pregnancies and I still get teary eyed at the first ultrasound when they are able to confirm the baby is growing). Celebrate the first photo you have of your baby and use it as a prop in your photos to share with others!
  • Include siblings in the pregnancy announcement, if this is not your first baby | As a lifestyle and mom blogger, I don’t force my kids to pose and smile for photos. If you’re able to give up some control and capture the real life moments of telling your kids the exciting news or letting them pose with whatever emotions they feel about the news of their new sibling – you’ll be able to laugh over those memories in the future!
  • Find unique pregnancy announcement photo props | You can easily find these on Amazon or Etsy, depending on what your style is! I personally love the pregnancy announcement banners, or the funny t-shirts, or modern pregnancy announcement onesies! Even finding a cute, tiny pair of baby shoes (they could be little replicas of your favourite pair) will centre your photos around your baby!

If you don’t have a camera, iPhones these days are just as good in portrait mode! A lot of bloggers are turning over to it – and if your phone has the portrait mode you can easily capture some gorgeous pregnancy announcement photos on your own.

Tell me, what are your favourite creative pregnancy announcement ideas? Are you going for the sentimental style or humourous side?

7 Best Pregnancy Skin Care Products In Canada | 38 Weeks Pregnant Update

I haven’t chatted about my pregnancy skin care products or skin care routine in a long time – I am constantly sharing the new products I’m testing out that I often forget to do an overall updated routine post! But if you’re new to reading about my skin care journey let me share a bit about my skin type and the 10 best pregnancy skin care products in Canada!

If you don’t know what skin type or skin problems you have, you might want to do some research before taking anyone’s recommendation (bloggers, magazines, friends, family members, literally anyone!) on skin care products for you to try. There is so much that goes into describing your skin: dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, maturing skin, sun damaged skin, sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, normal skin (unaffected by any products they use), etc.

Before you go buying a completely new skin care routine, figure out what type of skin and what problems you’re facing with it.

I know I have sensitive, acne-prone, very dry skin. My skin reacts instantly by breaking out if it doesn’t like certain beauty products – from skin care to make-up to hair care. And if I don’t moisturize after washing my face my skin becomes super tight and dry. Then there’s the hormonal acne around my chin and jawline, that come and go with the fluctuations of my hormones throughout the weeks.

So, now that you know more about my skin…

Right now, my morning skin care and night time skin care routines are super similar – previous years I have had completely different routines but at the moment I find that the less I have to do the better when I’m exhausted at the end of the day!

Here are the 10 best pregnancy skin care products in Canada (because that’s where I am, and I’m not 100% sure they are available world wide):

  1. Coconut Oil | If you’ve been around, you knew this one was coming and it might as well be first on the list! I’ve been using coconut oil to clean and moisturize my face for 4 years – I love that it reduces inflammation and helps healing wounds (like acne…). You can read more about how I wash my face with coconut oil, here!
  2. Thayers Witch Hazel Toner | For years I didn’t use a toner, then I fell in love with the Wild Craft Toner and it got me started back on the toner train! Now I use the Thayers Witch Hazel Toner after realizing that most no-name brand witch hazel that you find in the bandaid aisles of drug stores or grocery stores have alcohol in them. And alcohol is not good for your skin! Make sure you are always reading labels – you will be surprised what you find in your skin care!
  3. Vichy Mineral 89 | I love this stuff, it gives my skin that extra boost it needs in this crazy dry Alberta climate in Canada! It is packed full of goodies and is: Paraben-free, fragrance-free, alcohol-free, oil-free, non-greasy and silicone-free. All my favourite things to see on a skin care label!
  4. Vichy Mineral 89 Eyes | What!? You didn’t know that Vichy Canada released the first Vichy Mineral 89 Eyes this year? If you love the original Vichy Mineral 89, you need this one! It brightens, hydrates, and protects your under eye area. Plus, there is a little bit of caffeine in there to make your eyes extra smooth in the morning!
  5. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum | I don’t know which I’m more obsessed with – the price of this mineral blemish formula or the results! If you struggle with acne – hormonal or not – you will want to incorporate this easy product into your skin care routine for a flawless complexion! Use it all over your face or as a spot treatment – it’s up to you!
  6. Vichy Aqualia Thermal Rich Cream | I’ve been using this amazing face cream for a year and cannot live without it! I love how hydrated and smooth it feels on my face. There are different cream options for different skin types, but you know I need the rich cream for my very dry skin! Read more on my review of the entire Aqualia Thermal skin care line, here!
  7. Cerave SA Lotion | This is one of my favourite drugstore brand lotions ever! You can find the Cerave SA Lotion at Walmart or Shoppers Drug Mart or London Drugs – and they even have $2 off coupons online for you to use!

On a more personal note after my Instagram post today, which is aside from skin care and more on the pregnancy topic, I had my doctors appointment today! They did check my cervix (I know, TMI) and nothing has progressed. I didn’t expect it too since baby boy is still riding high up and has not dropped into my pelvis yet.

If he had dropped it would be the beginning of my body starting to initiate those labour inducing hormones, but alas that is not what is happening with him! He is snug as a bug!

He is also quite a large baby, despite this being a low risk pregnancy, he is measuring at 40 weeks instead of my current 38 weeks. He’s estimated to be at the 95%, but I’m not concerned at all – all of his sisters were large babies and in the same percentile.

I did get a call from my doctor after he discussed induction at 39 weeks with the local hospital’s OB/GYN, and I am officially on the induction list! I anticipate on getting a call from the hospital to come in for induction next Monday, and then we will see if the induction process is anything similar to Adeline’s two years ago.

I’m super excited to finally meet him, and can hardly wait to hold him!

Easy Summer Maternity Outfit Ideas | Third Trimester Pregnancy Dresses

I was a little worried when I bought this white striped maternity dress from Pink Blush in December… it was on clearance, but it was a size too big than I regularly wear. I took a chance and decided that if I needed to I could take the dress in at the bust if it was massive on me. I was desperate to have some easy summer maternity outfit ideas (you know, running after 3 kids when schools out I need everything to be easy breezy) because I knew my due date was July 30th.

While the dress felt massive when I tried it on at 2 months pregnant, it fits like a dream at 8 months pregnant! I’m sure the fit is supposed to be tighter in the bust, but right now I don’t want any fabric clinging to me while I’m carrying this big baby around.

Best of all? This maternity dress has pockets! If a dress has pockets, it’s a huge win in my mind!

This week, I’ve had a lot of messages on Instagram all asking where are my favourite places to shop for super easy summer maternity outfit ideas? Here are my top affordable maternity stores that I like to shop at:

Pink Blush Maternity – Best Maternity Dresses

Blue Summer Maternity Dress | Off The Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress | Pink Rose Pleated Maternity Dress

Target Maternity – Best Maternity Jeans And Pants

Black Skinny Maternity Jeans | Ripped Skinny Maternity Jeans | Pink Maternity Jeans

Motherhood Maternity – Best Nursing Bras

Nude Demi Underwire Nursing Bra | Wireless Lightly Lined Nursing Bra | Nursing Sleep Bra (there is a huge sale that ends tonight – July 10th, 2019!! Go snag a couple awesome nursing bras and camis and make sure you sign up for Ebates so you can get cash back on your Motherhood Maternity online purchase!)

If you know me, then you know I only shop those maternity stores during sales seasons!

I personally would rather wait than buy my items full price – like I said before the white striped maternity dress I’m wearing above is from a super clearance sale at Pink Blush Maternity where I stocked up on some gorgeous dresses in preparation for this summer.

While I am all for the best kept secret in shopping for maternity clothes, sometimes you have to visit those specific stores for the essentials!

Third Trimester Symptoms, What Is Normal To Feel?

The closer I get to my due date with our first baby boy (at the end of July), the more excited I am! But the excitement also comes with a lot of third trimester symptoms that affect me everyday too. Can we also reflect on how different third trimester symptoms are from first trimester symptoms? It is wild!

Are you having third trimester pregnancy pains? Hannah, from the popular Canadian mom blog Honey & Betts, is sharing what is normal for 3rd trimester symptoms - from leg cramps, to lightning crotch, to constipation. The aches and pains during 3rd trimester are no joke – with my first baby I had a crazy amount of swelling in my ankles and feet. With my second baby, I had swelling but not as bad. With my third, I had a lot of restless leg syndrome and calf cramps while sleeping.

Now with my fourth baby, I have been experiencing heart burn (which I never had with any of my pregnancies) and round ligament pain in my pelvis. Round ligament pain is sharp pelvic pain triggered by laying down or rolling over – it’s like getting a running cramp for no reason and not being able to relieve it until the pain stops on it’s own.

Even more recent, I have been getting these shooting pains that I can only describe as in my cervical area (TMI, but sometimes it’s helpful to know you’re not the only one out there feeling this) but unlike the round ligament pain, this pain is brief but more intense – I didn’t know what to call it until my friend let me know this third trimester symptom is called lightning crotch.

It’s painful, but fortunately common and not a concern!

Oh, and how could I forget the only common third trimester symptom I had with all my babies… back cramps! And literally in the same spot with every single one – midway up my back, right side of my spine, nestled in the latissimus dorsi.

These pregnancy back cramps flare up when I’m driving for long periods in the car. I think my back cramps happen because there is so much weight on my front that my back is working extra hard to sit correctly. I usually bring one of Matt’s (my husband) floor hockey balls and put it between a chair and my back then lean into it so the ball massages the cramp.

It’s not a perfect solution but the third trimester doesn’t last forever so this is what works best for me!

Don’t forget that not all moms experience the same third trimester pregnancy symptoms, though if you’re concerned you should always follow up with your doctor.

These are the most common 3rd trimester symptoms:
  • swelling
  • insomnia
  • not eating a lot/feeling full faster
  • restless leg syndrome
  • leg cramps
  • back and hip pain
  • breast pain
  • increased bathroom stops
  • lightheadedness
  • dizziness
  • fluid discharge (don’t tell me it doesn’t happen, because it does and you know it!)
  • bloating
  • constipation
  • breast pain
  • sciatica
  • and much more!

Like I mentioned in my Instagram post, you can read it here, these cups are a life saver for anyone on the go that also struggles with eating balanced, proportioned meals.

For me, I struggle with having the energy, drive, and creativity in those early postpartum months. So I have stocked up with a variety of Revive Superfoods to help me out, because eating soda crackers and whatever granola bars are left from my toddlers is not a healthy breakfast after getting up 3-4 times with a newborn.

If you’re interested in a promo code for Revive Superfoods, use HANNAH50 for 50% off your online order! My favourite smoothie so far is the Morning Mocha, and my favourite overnight oats cup is Banana Nut.

And these smoothies and oat cups are not just for adults, my kids love them (you can see Adeline is all over my overnight oats)! They beg for me to share with them and for me it’s not a problem since I know these cups are preservative free with no added sugar. Trust when I say, my kids do not need more sugar added to their food!

I also like Revive Superfoods because it’s gluten free and come dairy free – part of the instructions is to add your own milk to it. So if you prefer almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, etc – you can adapt the smoothie to your dietary needs!

Did I mention that Revive Superfoods ships within Canada and the USA for free? Free shipping is what sold me!

I’ll be sharing my Isle of Paradise tan reviews (the tanning drops and the tanning water) this summer too! Because they all have different applications, preferred uses, and difficulty levels – so I wanted to review each product with individual blog posts so it is not overwhelming.

Back to the Isle of Paradise mousse! I tested out the tanning mouse in light (it comes in light, medium and dark) – and the light one gives me the most natural looking tan. Maybe one day I’ll try the medium but even though I am fair with pink and olive undertones, the light does a great job!

Does it smell bad?

First off, let me clear the air – the Aisle of Paradise mousse does not smell like the stereotypical self tanner scent we all know well. It smells tropical and fresh! I really enjoy it, and the scent is consistent throughout all their tanning products.

How do you not get streaks when tanning?

When I first read the instructions on how to apply the Isle of Paradise light tanning mousse it mentions using a tanning mitt or a buffing mitt – if you are a beginner I highly recommend grabbing one from Sephora, or Amazon. It will make you are streak free!

But for myself, you can see above I used an old, dark facecloth that I knew the mousse wouldn’t noticeably stain. I’ve been doing this since I became super comfortable with self tanning a couple years ago – it’s a tried and true way of getting the same flawless tanning results with household items!

Let’s discuss the main reasons this is the best self tanner (especially for legs):
  1. It absorbs and dries quickly – I was unafraid to lie on top my white duvet 10 minutes after applying – it’s that good!
  2. It’s easy to apply – I like to apply the mousse one pump at a time, then using a sweeping motion down my leg to put it on. You can see exactly where you’ve applied it (it’s not a clear product on application, it is a dark brown), and I make sure just like when I’m shaving my legs to not leave any areas unattended. I leave my knees (front and back), ankles, and feet last – I use the leftovers of the mousse on the cloth to buff those areas. Since they have the driest skin too much tanning product could make them stand out in an obvious way!
  3. It gives a beautiful, sun-kissed glow – you do not need to worry about coming out orange (no matter if you choose the light, medium or dark options)! The results of the Isle of Paradise mousse is a bronzed, natural tan – which is what we are all looking for in a tanner!
  4. It smooths and evens out skin
  5. It is made without unnecessary chemicals – Isle of Paradise makes their products free of : Sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, triclocarban. Though it does have fragrance in it (if you’ve read this you know how I feel about fragrance!), it contains less than 1% of synthetic fragrance.
Here are my tips for how to apply self tanner:
  1. Exfoliate and shave your legs before – the bottle’s instructions suggest doing this 24 hours before you apply the tanning mousse but I didn’t do that here or any other time I’ve used it. And I have severely dry skin so you know my skin is absorbing the heck out of this product.
  2. If you’re a beginner, moisturize your hands, feet, knees, and elbows (if you’re doing your whole body) before you apply – using moisturizer makes it harder for the tanner to absorb into those really dry areas and make your tan look wonky. But I’ve been doing this for a while and feel confident applying self tanner without this step.
  3. Wash your hands!! Don’t forget to wash your hands after you apply your tanning products. Tip #2 says it will make it harder for the tanner to absorb, but it will still absorb into your skin so clean your hands diligently afterwards with soap and water.

I hope this helps you make an informed choice on if you want to purchase the Isle of Paradise Mousse in light or medium! I looked throughly through the online reviews of this tanning product and could not find any photos for comparison – I was unsure if the light would be too light or if the medium would be too dark.

I figured I was not the only one looking for before and after photos of the Isle of Paradise mousse!

Mistakes? What pregnancy style mistakes? Raise your hand if you remember my tulle skirt incident from when I was pregnant with Adeline! Because that was so embarrassing but gladly not the worst thing to ever happen – if you want to read up on that embarrassing story, click here.

You can see why I want to share these super helpful pregnancy style tips! Don’t repeat my mistakes!

Let’s dive right into my 3 practical pregnancy style tips:

  1. Pregnancy underwear seems unnecessary when developing your maternity clothes wardrobe – but the further along you are in your pregnancy the better pregnancy under wear are for you! These special underwear can save you stretch marks from tightness of regular underwear around your hips and legs. Make sure you at least one of each – nude, black and white – so you don’t repeat my mistake from the story above!
  2. Invest in a proper maternity coat if you are due during the cold months of the year, wherever you live! That would be a must for those of you who also live in Canada – splurge on a winter maternity coat.
  3. Are your maternity clothes breastfeeding friendly? If breastfeeding is the path you are going to take postpartum, I urge you to buy maternity clothes that you will also be able to comfortably breastfeed in. My first 2 pregnancies I bought so many fun maternity clothes but when it came to postpartum they were not easy to breastfeed in! Not only did I spend lots of money on maternity clothes but I then had to buy a different breastfeeding wardrobe because I was frustrated with the lack of accessibility for breastfeeding.
